why will microsoft not allow me to download updates for vista on my new computer

What does the computer do when you try to update? Does it display any message?

The update utility for Vista is WAY different than XP.

You don't (can't) go to the download page at Microsoft anymore.

If you go to Start %26gt; Control Panel %26gt; System and Maintenance %26gt; Windows Update %26gt; Check for Updates,

All you will really see is a stupid progress bar...you're not even positive if it's looking for anything or not.

I just simply wait to be notified in the notification area (by the 'time' displayed on the bottom right of the screen) that there are new updates available and then let it download and install them.
